Maternity Nursing Bras

Maternity Nursing BrasChoosing the right maternity nursing bra can be a difficult task, as there are many options available. New mothers want a bra that is comfortable, supportive, easy to use, and possibly even attractive. Finding a maternity nursing bra that meets all of these requirements is achievable, but there are several factors to consider.

Fit

The women’s clothing industry estimates that up to 80% of US women wear the wrong bra size, and it is even easier to choose the wrong bra for nursing without knowing what to look for. A fitting by a professional is the best way to ensure that your bra is the right size for your changing body.

Support

Maternity nursing bras are constructed differently from everyday bras because the breasts are much heavier and require additional support. Make sure that both the inner and outer cup construction is sturdy and that seams are smooth. A triangular cup with an opening in the center is one of the best designs, as it provides a “sling” type of support for the breast. Shoulder straps, sides, and the back of the bra should be sufficiently wide so that the bra lays flat and doesn’t cut into the skin.

Comfort

Other factors which make a maternity nursing bra comfortable to wear are the fabric and the construction. Natural cotton or a cotton blend with a high percentage of cotton is the coolest fabric against the skin. Lacy fabrics that promise air circulation often fail to provide the support that the breasts need.

Convenience

A good maternity nursing bra should allow a mother to hold her baby with one arm and use the other hand to open the bra cup for feeding. Two-handed cup closures are an exercise in frustration, especially when in a hurry to feed a cranky, hungry baby.

Fashion

A nursing mother likes to feel feminine and sexy, and maternity nursing bras with features like a lower décolletage, fashionable colors, or decorative embroidery help to accomplish this. Lace and pearl embellishments also help to add style.
